Mistake 1- not reporting the total loss to ALL insurers

-make sure you have a list of all insurers and send a copy, by certified mail to each insurance company.  Describe every category of damage at least to put the insurer’s on notice of the claim.  Make sure you are aware of excess policies too.

Mistake 2- not taking photos and videos right after the storm

-make sure you keep copies of all pictures and inventories of damage after a storm.  Do not send your originals without keeping color copies.

Mistake 3- not keeping a logbook of everyone you speak with

-professionals and vendors sometimes disappear after a storm.  Keep a record of everyone you talk to and get multiple contact information.

Mistake 4- not keeping an accurate record of receipts

-no doubt your insurance policies require claims to be supported by documentation.  Keep these records together with your log book.

Mistake 5 – not submitting a proof of loss within 60 days after a flood loss

-Flood policies are different than other insurance policies.  Make sure that you submit a sworn proof of loss within 60 days of the storm.
